Most of us would have probably heard of the great artists of the modern art era of the Western world. Here we are in Southeast Asia, thousands of miles away from Europe, and yet these artists, the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso are familiar names to the everyday person on the street.

Now, let’s come back to artists around the region – how many of us can actually name a single Southeast Asian Modern Artist? Even if we could rattle off a name or two (yes of course you’ve heard of Cheong Soo Pieng and Liu Kang), how many of us would actually dare say we truly know the works of these artists? I know I would not. Not even close.

This is where the The National Art Gallery, Singapore (or TNAGS) comes in – to educate each and everyone of us on artists around Southeast Asia and Singapore and their works of art.

The National Art Gallery, Singapore, recently introduced the new “Artwork of the Moment” segment that features a particular art piece from a Southeast Asian Artist. Clicking on each image will lead users to more information about the art piece and on the Artist. Each refresh of the page will show a new image, and with that, lead to new stories.

This new section aims to share some tidbits of information, and in doing so, slowly empowering us with more knowledge about the art from around the region.

Go check it out and tell us whether you’ve learnt anything new about Southeast Asian Artists and their Art.
