Turn on the TV, browse any website with some form of entertainment news coverage and you'll see Lady Gaga. Some of us love her, some of us hate her and some of us can't figure out what to feel or think about her but we all can agree that she is one entertaining character. So here's a possibly ridiculous thought, could she be… Art? Let me invite you to a conceptual leap to some decades back.

We have all come across some form of Pop Art in our lives. Just look around and we'll see Warhol's Campbells and Marilyn Monroe being ripped off and re-appropriated in multiple forms. Such is the irony of it – what was once a critique on advertising and cultural icons has itself become a cultural icon in its own right. More importantly, this was art that was made famous because of it's play on elements that were easily recognizable to the public.

Now take a look at Gaga. This is a woman who is more conscious of the music industry than any of her peers. Her over-the-top dressing style, suggestive music videos and grand entrances are all elements of a highly constructed image that is geared for the celebrity-mad, controversy-seeking media machine. Her awareness of pop-culture is undeniable as can be seen in the way she references a whole lot of it in her music video and also the way she works the media and almost manipulates it to her will with all of her antics.

Now the question: Could all of this possibly be Art? Heck, is SHE art? What do you think?

N 16.03.2011 She is definitely an artist and what she does on a whole is art. Watch any interview of hers, you'll hear that art is a very potent portion of what she does, and it translates into the rest of her craft, fashion and music. Gaga as Gaga though, I would say is a talented musician, fashion phenomenon, and a connoisseur of today's culture of fame. I don't think she's alike the asian artists mentioned at all because most of everything she wears and has on her sets are designed and made by her and her Haus. Top notch stuff. What I see on the asian musicians are just tacky and tasteless. Nobody gets hyped up about anything that they wear.
Wai Xiao Wen 10.03.2011 I think Lady Gaga didn't become 'Lady Gaga' by being dumb - this woman knows what she's doing. She pushes boundaries and won't take no as an answer. A dress made of plastic bubbles? Bring it on! A dress made of Kermit? Who's calling who crazy now... She is a walking art installation, that's what she is. She isn't a product of gimmicky marketing - she created herself, rather than being created to sell CDs. She's awesome.
Adib Jalal 04.03.2011 OLIVIA- I do wonder whether there were direct influences from Asian artists on Gaga. And as you’ve rightly pointed out, these Asian artists have been doing theatrics for the past few decades so perhaps such spectacle shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. YI-Sheng - Do you think people realise that this might be what some folks call “contemporary art”? And that bit about copying rather than innovating, I think it happens in every art/design field doesn’t it?

Olivia 04.03.2011 Lady Gaga is an artist. Never doubted it from the start. But looking at Asian artists such as Sammi Cheng, the late Anita Mui and Aaron Kwok...can we count them as influences to lady gaga's wacky costumes? Look at their concert outfits!
Ng Yi-Sheng 03.03.2011 I love her wearable art and eccentricity, actually. She's made contemporary art mainstream. My only sorrow is that her fans mimic her rather than coming up with their own craziness.
