Returning from the Sea

Chen Chong Swee, Returning from the Sea, 1972, watercolour on paper, 91 x 128 cm, collection of National Heritage Board

Returning from the Sea depicts a genre scene where fishermen were busily winding up the day’s activities after returning to shore. Chen has adopted a fluid and languid style in his brush strokes and subtle use of colours. One of the early artists instrumental in developing the Nanyang style, Chen pioneered attempts to interpret local tropical landscapes according to the Chinese concept of pictorial composition.
